Hi Evan, I would like to ask, what is the best way to input the entries if I want to switch from Broker A to Broker B. For example, i have 1,000 shares in BOC HK, so I want to sell everything from Broker A and purchase via Broker B. Let’s say my average price was HKD 24 and I bought and sold everything at HKD 36, so my closed P/L would be HKD 12,000, while my new average price would be HKD 36.
Is there a way to input these 2 entries so that my average price remains at the original HKD 24? I have excluded transaction fees in the above example to make it easier but I know after accounting for transaction fees (both buy and sell), my average price would be about HKD 25.
I would think to simply treat them as two separate transactions.
Sell at Broker A at HKD 36 then buy at Broker B at HKD 36.
There are two options.
Instead of creating a SELL then BUY. Simply migrate the original transaction from portfolio Broker A to portfolio Broker B then add increase the fees to adjust for the sell and buy. Note that this way, the transaction would not appear in Broker A and would seems like it never happened. If you want to still remind yourself that it was originally bought in Broker A, you can simply put a note in the transaction.
Create a SELL then BUY using HKD 24 as price instead of HKD 36. This would ensure that the average price is still at HKD24 and seems like would be the most similar to what happened.
